A glimpse of the future: the TARRAN T1 Pro cargo bike is anything but an ordinary electric cargo bike. It thinks, steers and charges more cleverly than many electric cars. Two kids, three Euro crates or a box of apples? No problem at all. But what’s really behind this high-tech reindeer on two wheels?

The name “TARRAN” is derived from the ancient word Tarandos, a mythical creature from Greek mythology said to resemble a reindeer. And because the TARRAN T1 Pro is packed with technology we’ve never seen on a cargo bike before, the nickname almost writes itself.

The company’s approach is clearly defined. The TARRAN T1 is designed to enable environmentally friendly mobility while creating meaningful family moments. That’s exactly why the TARRAN T1 is built for real-world use. To make sure everything runs smoothly, this cargo bike comes not only with a powerful mid-drive motor, but also with cameras, stabilising wheels and a host of smart digital features. But more on that later.

But this €7,000 eCargo bike has plenty more up its sleeve. And why we really didn’t want to give the cyborg reindeer back, you can read right here.

What Makes the TARRAN T1 Pro Cargo Bike Special?

Admittedly, our photo gallery is a little short on snow and festive vibes. Then again, it was 22 °C in Tenerife on the 24th of December.

The TARRAN T1 Pro is no ordinary cargo bike. It feels as if Santa’s reindeer had been sent into the future, given a serious tech upgrade and then told, “Right, off you go without the snow.” What was once a wooden sleigh is now a rolling high-tech machine, packed with more sensors than some modern SUVs, yet still tasked with the very same mission. To transport everything that matters in everyday life safely, steadily and reliably. Kids, groceries, crates of apples or half of Santa’s sack included.

In park mode, the stabiliser wheels are fully deployed, leaving the TARRAN standing upright as if propped up on a stand.

Here, manoeuvre mode is active, allowing you to move the bike freely without it tipping over.

The secret of the TARRAN doesn’t lie in a single feature, but in an entire herd of smart little helpers working together like a well-drilled team of reindeer on Christmas Eve. Take the electrified stabiliser wheels, for example. These are not nostalgic bits of hard plastic, but an intelligent system that ensures stability like invisible elves whenever you need it most. In manoeuvre mode, they keep the bike perfectly upright, no matter whether two kids are wriggling about, the shopping is shifting or your own sense of balance is still in pyjamas.

Add to that the fully suspended construction, which is still a rarity among cargo bikes. Of course, this doesn’t turn the TARRAN T1 into a mountain bike, but it is designed to make everyday riding noticeably easier. Bumps are absorbed, resulting in a smoother and more composed ride feel.

The powerful mid-drive motor churns out 100 Nm of torque, as if a reindeer fuelled by espresso were pulling it along. To make sure that power is delivered smoothly, you adjust the gearing via a stepless Enviolo hub. The heavy-duty version fitted here offers a 380% gear range. By the way, TARRAN rely on a clean, low-maintenance belt drive, so there is no chain to oil. Just give the belt a quick wipe with a damp cloth every now and then.

TARRAN T1 PRO E Cargo Bike WEB 4618
Spoiler alert: the motor was delivered in-house and delivers 100 Nm of smooth, well-balanced power.

But the real wonderland opens up once the electronics come to life. A front camera, a rear camera, a child cam and a selfie cam, collision warnings, a display sharper than some smartphones, plus an integrated speaker for alerts or the obligatory reindeer “tooooot”. Yes, it really does have a horn, even if it sounds more like a ship’s foghorn. Together, all of this forms a digital guardian angel team that not only keeps watch, but can even provide evidence should a Grinch decide to have a tug at the bike.

The Bluetooth speaker, which also handles the bell function, is neatly integrated into the TARRAN.

In short, the TARRAN T1 Pro is a forward-thinking cargo bike that already employs technologies that are likely to become standard in the years to come. A modern-day sleigh that shows where the entire segment could be heading.

Cyborg Reindeer: Connectivity Taken to the Next Level

Before the cyborg reindeer takes up the reins, it needs fresh energy, just like any hard-working beast of burden. You can charge the bike directly or remove the 708 Wh battery, which sits protected beneath the load platform and can be unlocked using the battery lock and the two supplied keys. If you’re planning really long days in the saddle, the TARRAN T1 Pro can even be run with two batteries. Only one is included as standard, though. Santa has probably still got the second one in his sack.

Once the battery is in place, you first wake the cargo bike via the remote on the left side of the handlebars and then unlock it using NFC. A short beep follows, and the 5.2-inch Retina display lights up. Alternatively, you can pair the bike with the TARRAN app and unlock it via your smartphone.

Two NFC cards are supplied for unlocking the TARRAN T1 Pro.

Once paired with the TARRAN app, you can activate the bike conveniently via your smartphone. The top tube provides the perfect place for it, complete with wireless charging.

With the TARRAN ecosystem activated, the in-house 100 Nm mid-drive motor is operated via a generously equipped remote on the handlebars. At first, the array of buttons feels like the cockpit of a Christmas sleigh in overdrive. There’s a lot to press and plenty to explore. But after a short learning curve, everything falls into place. By contrast, the 5.2-inch Retina display is clearly laid out, with intuitive menus that make sense as soon as you have got to grips with the remote.

TARRAN T1 PRO E Cargo Bike WEB 4533
The remote is on the chunky side. With 14 different commands spread across 11 buttons, it takes a bit of time to get used to.

That leaves the TARRAN app itself, which is where the cyborg reindeer’s real spell book is hidden. This is where you can activate the start-up booster, customise ride modes and control a wide range of system functions. If you want, the system will also save footage from the integrated cameras, even when the bike is in park mode. In addition to the cameras, a sensor at the rear warns you of approaching objects from behind, whether they are bikes or cars.

App-based navigation did not work during our test, with a note indicating that the feature will be available soon.

In short, the TARRAN T1 Pro feels as if Santa had modernised his workshop and equipped the sleigh with a smart command centre. Forward-thinking, safety-focused and touched with a hint of magic.

Clear the Way! The TARRAN T1 Pro Out on the Road

A dropper post on a cargo bike? On the TARRAN T1 Pro, this is not a gimmick but an integral part of the comfort package. Height adjustment is not controlled from the handlebars, however, but directly under the saddle. That’s understandable given how packed the remote already is with functions and buttons, but it’s not an ideal solution at traffic lights. Especially on a heavy cargo bike, you want to get a foot on the ground as quickly as possible without taking your hands off the bars. Our advice is to retrofit an electronic dropper post. It adds one more button to the cockpit, but delivers a big boost in comfort and everyday safety. Alongside the dropper, the handlebar height can also be adjusted quickly via a quick-release, allowing different riders to set up the futuristic load-hauling sleigh in no time.

Tuning tip: An electronic dropper post with handlebar remote gives you even better control of the bike.

Take Off: From Park Mode to Flight Mode

Once the handlebars and saddle are set, things get serious. A long press on the “P” button brings the TARRAN T1 Pro to life. The stabiliser wheels switch from park mode to manoeuvre mode, and it feels very TARRAN, as if someone has just initiated the start-up sequence of a high-tech sleigh. The stabiliser wheels steady the bike, keep it perfectly balanced and allow precise positioning before you actually “take off”. Well, before you ride away.

TARRAN T1 PRO E Cargo Bike WEB 4194
Here, the stabiliser wheels are fully deployed – though you’ll have to look closely, as the sun is quite dazzling.

Once the load is on board and you’re in the saddle, the app lets you decide whether the stabiliser wheels deploy manually or only after pressing a button on the remote. In the latter case, the 30-second launch mode starts automatically. As you begin pedalling and roll away, the stabiliser wheels retract on their own, while an adjustable boost helps the TARRAN pick up speed even faster. Almost like a team of reindeer breaking into a run.

As soon as the stabiliser wheels fold away, the TARRAN glides over the tarmac with surprising lightness. The in-house motor runs quietly and delivers plenty of drive. The three support modes more than cover everyday urban riding and inspire a reassuring, predictable ride feel from the very first metres.

TARRAN T1 PRO E Cargo Bike WEB 4150
Once the TARRAN takes off, the sleigh seems to glide effortlessly along.

Only on very steep ramps does the system run up against its physical limits. Not because of the motor, but because the Enviolo hub doesn’t offer enough gear range under full load on extreme climbs. On flat ground and moderately hilly terrain, however, this is hardly noticeable and does not detract from the overall impression in the slightest.

Cruising and Handling: Confident, Stable and Surprisingly Agile

While cruising in relaxed fashion between the apple orchards on our test rides in and around Brixen, there is less of a Christmas or sleigh vibe. Instead, this is where the stepless Enviolo twist shifter really shows its strengths. You can dial in the right ratio calmly from the handlebar, and especially at traffic lights, winding it back into an easy gear feels like a small gift, allowing you to pull away smoothly and without stress.

TARRAN T1 PRO E Cargo Bike WEB 4419

Thanks to its dual-cable steering, the TARRAN feels more direct than you would expect from such a bulky bike. Tight hairpins, tricky entrances or narrow courtyards are handled with surprising confidence. The generous steering angle allows the rear wheel to pivot almost on the spot. Of course, a cable steering system responds differently from that of a conventional bike, with a slight delay that quickly becomes familiar. After a short adjustment period, the handling blends seamlessly into the feeling of guiding an exceptionally good-natured high-tech reindeer.

TARRAN T1 PRO E Cargo Bike WEB 4283

On top of that come the features already mentioned, which are always watching over the TARRAN. The radar reliably detects vehicles approaching from behind. When riding with a companion, however, you should switch off the acoustic alert, as it will otherwise trigger every time the other rider comes close. Once you have got to grips with the remote, the indicators are easy to operate and clearly signal your intentions from the front. From the rear, though, their positioning is not ideal, as the lights can be partially obscured by the rider.

TARRAN T1 PRO E Cargo Bike WEB 4424 600x400 TARRAN T1 PRO E Cargo Bike WEB 4198 600x400

Once you’ve reached your destination, a press of the down arrow on the remote is enough and the stabiliser wheels deploy again. It works flawlessly. You just should not forget to do it, otherwise the crate of apples will get a proper shaking.

Safety for the Little Reindeer: Who Should Take a Closer Look at the TARRAN T1 Pro?

The TARRAN T1 Pro is for anyone who wants to carry people or cargo safely and without stress in everyday life. Families in particular benefit enormously from the stabiliser wheels, which completely eliminate that awkward tipping feeling. Whether children are climbing in, backpacks are shifting or the weekly shop starts pulling to one side, the bike remains as calm as an experienced sleigh driver in a snowstorm.

It’s also a genuine alternative for anyone looking to switch from a car to a cargo bike. The space requirement is not insignificant. A cargo bike is still a cargo bike. But thanks to the removable batteries, charging is easy even if there is no socket right where you park it. If you have enough space and are willing to embrace modern technology, you’ll get a vehicle that can handle a large part of everyday urban life with ease.

Conclusions about the TARRAN T1 Pro

If Santa were ever to send his reindeer into a well-earned retirement, the TARRAN T1 Pro would have a good chance of being appointed as the electric sleigh’s successor. The idea behind it is a strong one. Modern technology that genuinely eases everyday life and noticeably increases safety thanks to the stabiliser wheels. At the same time, TARRAN packs so many features into the bike that it can occasionally feel like a bit too much of a good thing. But if you’re willing to embrace it, you’ll discover a vehicle that is thoughtfully designed, rides with impressive composure and genuinely breaks new ground.
