All that’s missing is an urban world championship – though, sadly, there’s no trophy yet for the fastest commuter. But if there were, chances are the winner would be sitting on this rocket: the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTD.
That’s right! The Turbo Vado SL 2 was originally designed as a city and fitness bike – available as the EQ version with mudguards and a rack, or as a step-through for maximum comfort. But with this strictly limited edition, Specialized unleashed their performance crew. The result? A city e-rocket infused with the manufacturer’s racing DNA: SRAM RED drivetrain and brakes, Roval carbon wheels, and a one-piece carbon cockpit straight out of the XC and high-end road racing world leave no doubt about its intentions.
The goal: an ultra-light e-bike built for fast commuting, fitness, and exploration. To make sure even casual city riders feel blazing fast on the climbs, it comes with Specialized’s SL 1.2 Light-Assist motor paired with a 520 Wh battery. As a result, the Turbo Vado SL 2 LTD S-Racing tips the scales at just 14.14 kg in size L, retailing at an eye-watering € 9,999. Sounds like an uncompromising city racer. But how does it ride? Out of nowhere, a bright-red heavyweight rolls into view: the Specialized Porto in blazing red. As eye-catching as the color is, the real highlight is the load at the back – and the question of how it made it onto a cargo bike. For this special moment, Specialized reworked the Porto with a custom setup to haul not one, but two Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTDs in great style. The sight alone would make any shaggy mule question its life choices. Together with Stephan, the two bikes, and the hefty construction, the rig tipped the scales at a solid 175 kg. And it still had room to spare: the compact powerhouse can handle up to 200 kg. Mounted on the custom-built rack are two brand-new Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTDs – two of just 220 units worldwide. And in that moment, it’s clear: this isn’t a normal test. Because this isn’t a normal bike. The Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing isn’t a city e-bike for everyday use, nor a mass-market model with fenders and a pannier rack. Instead, it’s a strictly-limited special edition with just one goal: maximum riding fun! With the front wheels perched on the Porto’s front rack, the cargo bike suddenly looks like a support car at a classic road race. A bold entrance, no doubt!
Stephan casually mentions that only a handful of people have received the strictly limited Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTD: Peter Sagan, Florian Lipowitz … and us, the DOWNTOWN Magazine. Sharing a podium with three-time road world champion Peter Sagan and this year’s Tour de France third-place finisher – and Germany’s rising star in road racing – Florian Lipowitz? That’s something we could get used to. Or rather, something we’ll have to, because our gaping mouths and wide eyes told a very different story when the bright-red surprise rolled up in front of us.
Specialized is deeply rooted in racing – but how much of that really rubs off on the Active line? With its carbon parts and high-end road bike groupset, the Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTD strongly suggests that there’s more racing DNA in this city bike than you’d ever expect – at least at first glance!
Inspired by Performance – What Makes the Turbo Vado SL 2 LTD S-Racing Special?
Racing! Just as Formula 1 doubles as a proving ground for innovations before they trickle down into production cars, Specialized follows the same playbook. Decades of experience and countless victories in road, gravel, and mountain bike racing trickle down directly into Specialized’s production bikes. If you’re not deeply immersed in the bike universe, you might not notice it – but it’s there in the details, even when you’re just cruising through the city on an e-bike.
To convey that to people outside the cycling bubble, you’ve got to stand out – and the Turbo Vado SL 2 does exactly that. The Gloss Vivid Red paint job with white decals on the down- and top tube, combined with the silver accents of its components, makes the bike look like a Ferrari – just with two wheels instead of four.
One thing’s for sure: this bike will turn heads wherever you take it. But let’s be clear – a flashy red paint job alone can’t tell the full story of just how deeply Specialized is connected to racing. It doesn’t reveal that Ned Overend became world champion on a Specialized mountain bike back in 1990, or that riders like Remco Evenepoel, Primož Roglič, and countless others have racked up road racing victories for – and with – Specialized.
Exciting vs. boring! To draw attention to their proud racing heritage, Specialized’s designers equipped the Turbo Vado SL 2 city e-bike with top-tier racing components and a special paint finish – defying any sense of everyday practicality. And that’s exactly what makes this bike truly special.
To make sure that everyone in the saddle of this city e-bike can attack climbs like the WorldTour elite in the French Alps at 25 km/h, the Turbo Vado SL 2 comes equipped with a Specialized 1.2 motor delivering up to 320 watts of peak power and 50 Nm of torque. It’s paired with a permanently integrated 520 Wh battery.
Comfort and racing? The only comfort feature on the limited-edition Vado is the Specialized Future Shock 3.2 system – a light, compact, and seamlessly integrated damping unit in the head tube that filters out vibrations and impacts. Because according to Specialized: smooth is fast! Even this detail comes straight from race development: to avoid being completely rattled to pieces on the cobblestones of classics like the Paris-Roubaix, Specialized engineers created Future Shock. Mounted above the head tube, the system can move vertically and provides up to 20 mm of compliance. And guess what: in 2018, Peter Sagan won the legendary race aboard a Specialized Roubaix equipped with Future Shock. A few years later, tada – it’s also built into the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2.
To keep things grounded, though: at the end of the day, the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTD is still a city bike – the mounts for a rack and kickstand give that away. At its core, it’s a souped-up Turbo Vado SL 2 with the standard carbon frame, but fitted with components that are second to none.
High-End Parts – The Specs of the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 LTD S-Racing
Let’s start at the top with the one-piece XC cockpit featuring 780 mm carbon handlebars. Specialized borrowed this straight from the Epic, their cross-country race bike that we already tested with our collegues at sister magazine ENDURO. On the handlebars sit the two levers of the SRAM RED brakes – the crème de la crème in the road bike segment. Extremely light, delivering top-tier braking performance, and usually found only on high-end road bikes. The two-piston brakes are paired with a 160 mm rotor at the rear and a 180 mm disc up front. That’s more than enough to bring the 14.14 kg bike and its rider to a stop.
Shifting is taken care of by a wireless, 12-speed SRAM RED AXS drivetrain with an AXS pod controller, a 10–36 T cassette and 44 T chainring. Admittedly, that’s not the widest gear range compared to the standard Turbo Vado SL 2. But that’s what the motor is for – plus, the bike weighs just 14.14 kg.
Let’s move on to the wheels, a key component in both racing and the Vado S-Racing model. It comes with Roval Rapide CL III carbon wheels, approved for riders up to 120 kg. They’re built to deliver explosive acceleration and precise handling, and are normally only found on high-end road bikes.
Mounted on the premium rims are 28” x 1.35” Mondo Folding Endurance tires – that’s 35 mm, noticeably narrower and faster than the stock tires of the Vado SL 2. They promise an extra dose of agility, especially on tarmac. As all-round tires, however, they should also handle the occasional detour onto a gravel path.
Equipped with a USB-C charging port for your phone and fully connected: the Specialized MasterMind H3 display pairs with the Specialized app, allowing you to fine-tune features like motor response and riding modes. Everything is conveniently controlled via the handlebar remote, which delivers tactile feedback and can be operated precisely even with gloves.
The app unlocks even more smart features like motor lock and an alarm that beeps if someone moves your bike without permission. Particularly clever is the intelligent battery management system: you can set how much charge should remain at the end of your ride, and the system automatically adjusts support to make it happen. And if your bike should disappear: thanks to Apple’s “Find My” network integration, the Vado SL 2 can be tracked like a hidden AirTag – directly via your iPhone.
The Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 on the Road!
What any seasoned city bike tester immediately wonders: what do you even do with a bike like this? Who needs it? And € 10,000? For what? No lights, no fenders, no storage, no kickstand – but everything in carbon. Every part of me screams: UNREASONABLE!
But as my eyes drift from the bright-red Turbo Vado SL beneath me to the Ferrari parked on the street, I start to get it. After the first few meters on the bike, with a huge grin on my face, it all suddenly clicks – this is about one thing: pure fun.
Reason gives way to fun! Everyday practicality gives way to racing! One thing’s clear: this city e-bike is anything but ordinary. It’s not about rational choices or utility – it’s about emotions and pure riding pleasure. And on this bike, that pleasure is massive.
Once we climbed into the saddle, we didn’t want to get off. The riding position is sporty, with every movement driving power straight into the pedals. By that point, the Turbo Vado SL had us hooked – or better yet, dropped us. Because back at the office, all our colleagues could see was scorched tarmac. The Specialized 1.2 motor kicks in smoothly, delivering just the right punch. And when we blasted through the next intersection at over 30 km/h in under five seconds, we couldn’t help but grin at the display: understood, fast → fun!
In no time at all, the Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTD is up to speed. You barely notice when the motor cuts out at the 25 km/h threshold – apart from the sore legs the next day. Why does it feel so unleashed? Obviously because of our incredibly powerful thighs. Okay, jokes aside: it mainly comes down to the fast road tires and the bike’s roughly 14 kg weight.
So there we were, grinning ear to ear, tearing through the streets when suddenly we hit a dead end with a staircase rising up like an unscalable summit. But at just 14 kg, the Vado is light enough to simply sling over your shoulder and carry up the steps with ease.
Back in the saddle, straight into the old town. Cobblestones – brutal on the backside. Specialized trimmed the Vado consistently towards performance – comfort comes second. The Roval carbon wheelset is light and stiff, which helps with acceleration but not with damping rough terrain. The road-bike tires, unusually skinny for a city bike, follow the same logic: plenty of speed, but relatively little comfort. At least the Future Shock in the head tube filters out vibrations and small chatter. Overall, like a Ferrari, the Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTD isn’t built for off-road adventures. But as long as there’s smooth tarmac ahead, the Vado can hold speed even on longer tours. And if the route doesn’t include too many climbs, you’ll hardly need the motor.
Shaken up, weaving past pedestrians blocking the bike lane, the beefed-up Vado shows its strength once again: the steering is direct without being twitchy. It inspires confidence – even when you dive into the corner of your favorite café at speed, you stay in full control. The blend of speed, precision, and agility creates a ride feel that begs you to push harder.
And as the café guests stare at us, we briefly wonder if we’ve simply become ridiculously good-looking over the past few days … until we remember: we’re sitting on a bright-red rocket.
Who Should Take a Closer Look at the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 LTD S-Racing?
As you might have guessed, the target group for a performance city e-bike is pretty narrow, or rather small. To be exact: 220 people. This limited-edition model is made for those who want a special fun bike. Hop on and go, cruise through winding city streets, roll out to the next village on a whim, or charge up an Alpine pass on the weekend. That’s exactly what this bike is built for. Reason? Forget it. This is all about speed, fun, and the feeling of riding something truly special.
Apart from being a pure fun machine, it also doubles as a fitness bike – and it wants to be used that way. Whether it’s for a workout or just a ride to the pub down the road – both are fair game. If you really wanted to, you could make Specialized’s limited-edition bike a bit more practical for everyday use by adding fenders, a kickstand, and a rack. Technically, the Vado SL 2 LTD S-Racing has all the mounting points. But that would kill the vibe, add weight, and dull its snappy handling. After all, you don’t drive a Ferrari with a trailer in the slow lane 😉
So, who gets to ride the limited-edition Vado? In theory, anyone. But you’ll have to make it to a Specialized dealer and hope they still have one in stock. In the end, it takes not just a hefty budget, but also a solid dose of luck.
