The PUKY LR 1 L Br on Test

Half scooter, half bike: the low-slung steel frame of the PUKY LR 1 L Br makes it easy for kids to step over the wide footrest and get rolling.

As expected from PUKY, both the banana-shaped saddle and handlebar are height-adjustable. The thick grip ends and handlebar pad offer added protection. That said, the headset cover only makes sense once you rotate it so that the bolt doesn’t point menacingly towards the rider’s knees. Sadly, there’s no steering limiter either, which would help mitigate the risk of sudden, jerky maneuvers. On the plus side, the integrated kickstand makes parking somewhat easier.

Why does that chunky clamp point straight at the knees?

The wide footrest is a hit with kids – lots of space, lots of use.

The 12″ pneumatic tires offer ample grip and soak up bumps nicely thanks to their high volume. However, the braking performance of the LR 1 L Br is disappointing: the outdated drum brake lacks stopping power, and the sharp-edged brake lever is uncomfortable and barely adjustable – a real killjoy.

At nearly 5 kg, it’s also the heaviest bike on test. If you can live with those downsides, you still get a tough little balance bike at a relatively affordable price.

The brake lever offers limited adjustability for small hands.

Overall, the drum brake feels a bit outdated.

Conclusion

The PUKY LR 1 L Br fails to live up to its performance promise. Its weak, outdated drum brakes, heftiest weight on test, and inconsistent component choices overshadow the otherwise smart frame design with its integrated footrests. Since it’s just slightly more affordable than significantly better alternatives – like the KUbikes 12 – it simply can’t keep up with the competition.

Tops

  • Smart frame design with integrated footrests

Flops

  • Sub-par brakes
