Stainless steel, elegance, precision. The Bezzera DUO DE brings café vibes into your kitchen. With nostalgic retro looks, polished chrome and digital precision under the bonnet, this Italian machine shows how modern tech and espresso tradition can blend seamlessly – all for around €2,100.

This review is part of our group test: “7 Espresso Machines in Review – What Is the Best Espresso Machine for Your Home?”. We examined models ranging from €300 to €6,000 – from compact entry-level machines to high-end barista dreams. Along the journey came latte art experiments, a few scorched fingers, and more than enough caffeine coursing through our veins. Here’s the guide and overview of all machines tested.

Bezzera is nothing short of legendary – since 1901, the Italian manufacturer has been building espresso machines that embody Italian coffee culture. With the DUO DE, the Milan-based heritage brand bridges the gap between retro charm and modern electronics. It looks like a classic barista machine straight out of your favorite café, but beneath the polished stainless steel lies some serious tech.

As a dual boiler with heat exchanger design, the DUO DE does it all at once: espresso, steam, and hot water. It features three PID thermostats to precisely control the temperature of the brew group, the 0.45 l coffee boiler, and the 1 l steam boiler. Bezzera bring café-level fine-tuning right into your home – including the option to hook it up to a mains water line. Unlike its more manual sibling, the DUO MN, the DE model embraces modern tech: electronic controls, portion buttons, and smart volumetrics that automatically stop the shot at just the right time. The result? Espresso that’s consistently on point – at the push of a button.

Bezzera DUO DE on Review – So, What’s It Like Living With This Espresso Machine?

Specs are one thing, but how does the DUO DE actually perform in everyday life? From materials and handling to workflow and that first cappuccino – here’s what it’s like to use this machine day to day.

First Impressions: Design, Build & Feel

Classic barista elegance in chrome, just like the machines you see in old-school Italian cafés. The Bezzera DUO DE shines with a flawless stainless steel body – almost too pretty to touch. But spin it around and there’s a twist: the back panel lights up neon white beneath a plexiglass plate, showcasing the brand name in a tuner-style display. Love it or hate it – the back isn’t something you’ll be looking at often. What you do see daily, though, is the dirty water in the drip tray. The open grid offers little visual cover, which somewhat dulls the machine’s polished appearance.

Minor blemishes: the wooden knobs for steam and hot water have a bit of play.

The open grid on the drip tray offers an unwanted view of the dirty water below.

Still, the overall aesthetic is a win. The mix of stainless steel and wood handles gives it a refined, cohesive look – perfect for fans of classic silver espresso machines. Optional side panels in green, black, red, or white add a splash of personality. One visual hiccup? The digital display doesn’t quite vibe with the rest of the design – more on that in a bit.

Tactile feel is mostly spot on. The wooden portafilter handle feels great in hand, and the brew buttons respond with a satisfying press. A slight letdown: the wooden knobs for steam and hot water have a bit of give. It’s not a dealbreaker, but on a machine from a brand with over a century of craftsmanship, you’d expect tighter tolerances. That said, the wood comes standard and looks the part – so we’ll let it slide.

At 27.3 kg, the DUO DE is a heavyweight. It’s a chore to move, but once in place, it’s rock solid when locking in the portafilter. The footprint is just as bold: 47 cm deep and 43 cm tall – not exactly cabinet-friendly. But if you’ve got the room, this one’s a statement piece.

Bezzera DUO DE on Review: Heat-Up Time & Workflow

Patience is still a virtue here: with a heat-up time of well over 20 minutes, the Bezzera DUO DE is one of the slower starters in our review. But the system behind it makes the wait worthwhile. Once it’s up to temperature, the machine delivers consistent espresso and steam – even in continuous operation. For those who don’t want to wait around in the morning, there’s a clever workaround: the DUO DE offers adjustable boiler priority. That means you can choose which boiler heats up first – espresso or steam. Prioritize the brew boiler and you’ll save both time and energy. It’s a feature you’ll learn to appreciate, especially compared to other dual boilers like the ECM Synchronika or Rocket R Cinquantotto, which don’t offer this option. (We’ve reviewed the R Cinquantotto in a separate single test, by the way.)

The Bezzera DUO DE proves it can effortlessly manage office-level espresso and cappuccino output – perfect for flats, offices, and small cafés alike. One usability snag: to refill the water tank, you have to remove the entire cup tray. So if you like to pre-warm your cups, you’ll need to lift them off every time – a small but annoying chore.

Ease of Use & Settings

Retro charm meets smart tech. The Bezzera DUO DE features four programmable shot buttons plus a manual brew option. Programming is a breeze – just a quick glance at the manual and you’re set. Once dialed in, the volumetric system takes over and delivers your espresso automatically, shot after shot.

Additional advanced settings are accessible through the display menu. The TFT touchscreen feels like a blast from the past – pixelated text and a menu structure that takes a minute to figure out. It’s far from intuitive, but if you take the time to dig in, you’ll uncover a surprising range of features:

  • Temperature control for both boilers
  • Pre-infusion programming
  • Boiler priority selection
  • Automatic cleaning cycles
  • On/off timer

Volumetrics, pre-infusion & co. – what does it all actually mean?

Feeling overwhelmed by all the tech jargon? You’ll find a clear overview of the key technologies in the world of portafilter machines in the main article of our group test.

Still, the Bezzera DUO DE isn’t as nerdy as the Sanremo YOU. If you want full control with pressure and temperature profiling, you’ll need to look at pro-level machines like the YOU.

A minor design shortcoming: the touchscreen is positioned right next to the hot brew group. Eventually, using the display means risking contact with the heated metal. In terms of ergonomics, machines like the LIGRE youn or Sanremo YOU are much better thought out.

How Well Does It Handle Coffee and Milk Texturing?

One word: easy. In everyday use, the Bezzera DUO DE proves itself with super-straightforward handling. After programming your preferred volumes for single, double, and lungo shots using the buttons, the volumetrics truly come into their own: the machine delivers consistently precise results at the push of a button. A pleasant hum accompanies each brew – the quiet rotary pump makes this one of the best-sounding machines in our review, right up there with the La Marzocco Linea Micra and Sanremo YOU.

When it comes to steaming, the Bezzera DUO DE leaves little to be desired. Steam flows strong and steady from the wand, giving cappuccino fans much better results than machines like the ZURIGA E2-S or De’Longhi Dedica Duo. One downside: the polished body is a fingerprint magnet – so expect a quick wipe-down after each session.

Who Should Take a Closer Look at the Bezzera DUO DE?

  • Ambitious home baristas with a soft spot for classic looks
  • Anyone craving commercial-grade tech at home
  • Heavy drinkers (of coffee) and small office setups
  • Those who value volumetrics and temperature stability
  • Less ideal for purists and minimalists who prefer stripped-down simplicity

Does It Live Up to the Hype?

Bezzera promise a semi-pro machine with features straight from the café – and that promise holds up. Three PIDs, volumetrics, dual boiler, mains water connection, rotary pump: the DUO DE brings pro tech into a home-friendly package. Its one real flaw lies in the user interface – the outdated display impacts the overall ease of use. The DUO DE wants to be simple but gets in its own way a bit. That said, it absolutely delivers on the fundamentals: excellent espresso, powerful steam, and rock-solid reliability.
