This review is part of our group test: “7 Espresso Machines in Review – What Is the Best Espresso Machine for Your Home?”. We examined models ranging from €300 to €6,000 – from compact entry-level machines to high-end barista dreams. Along the journey came latte art experiments, a few scorched fingers, and more than enough caffeine coursing through our veins. Here’s the guide and overview of all machines tested.
The Sanremo YOU sits firmly at the top of the home barista segment – and feels like someone clicked “yes” on every single upgrade in the configurator. Dual boiler with PID control, quiet rotary pump, manual pressure and flow profiling via paddle, programmable brew profiles with pre-infusion, volumetric dosing at the push of a button, simultaneous hot water and steam – the YOU provides a full spectrum of possibilities. Originally designed for small cafés, it’s now popping up more and more in private homes and office kitchens.
Its RRP has dropped significantly over the years, from €7,500 to around €5,800, but you’ll still have to shell out between five and six grand at most retailers. That price tag makes it clear where the YOU wants to play: in the premium league for home baristas who want full control over every extraction parameter – or at least the option to take the reins. Sanremo promises “absolute control” and calls the machine your “personal assistant” – and that’s exactly how the YOU presents itself: not as a limiting factor, but as a toolbox. Coffee nerds, get ready to sweat.
Whether the average espresso-loving human really needs or even understands every feature is another story. But they could. And even if all you’re doing is pulling your daily cappuccino – everyone around you will know this machine means business. That makes it the perfect statement piece for stylish office kitchens and brand showrooms too. But the big question remains: does the Sanremo YOU deliver in real-world testing – and is the steep price tag justified?

Sanremo YOU on Review – So, What’s It Like Living With This Espresso Machine?
Specs are one thing, but how does the YOU actually perform in everyday life? From materials and handling to workflow and that first cappuccino – here’s what it’s like to use this machine day to day.
First Impressions: Design, Build & Feel
The Sanremo YOU follows a clean, technical design language – showroom-worthy, premium, without shouting for attention. It doesn’t need to. Among coffee connoisseurs, its high-end reputation is already well established Polished stainless steel side panels or wooden accents frame a black or white lacquered metal chassis, topped with a stainless steel cup tray. The build quality is excellent: tight panel gaps, crisp edges, even paintwork, no rattling – only the buttons and handles show the slightest bit of play.
The cup tray is generously sized and features a practical rail to keep everything in place – no cups falling off here. The touch display sits above the brew group, neatly integrated into the front panel. It doesn’t feel like a tacked-on gimmick but rather what it actually is: the central cockpit for serious coffee lovers. Speaking of central – the YOU takes up space. At 52 cm deep and 38.5 cm tall, it demands a spot where it can shine – much like a luxury watch worn for those in the know.
One thing that’s anything but luxurious? The included cleaning brush. Hard plastic handle, rough bristles – it feels like a bad joke. Honestly, better to skip it altogether.
But the Sanremo YOU quickly redeems itself with its sound design. Thanks to the rotary pump, every shot is accompanied by a rich, satisfying hum that quietly whispers “premium.” It’s wild, but that sound alone makes every espresso just that little bit more satisfying.
Sanremo YOU Review: Heat-Up Time & Workflow
Like a quick stretch before the run: As a dual boiler, the Sanremo YOU takes its sweet time to warm up – expect a good 15+ minutes before it’s ready to go. That’s longer than machines with thermoblocks, but once it’s up to temperature, it runs like clockwork. Espresso extraction and steaming run seamlessly in parallel, with back-to-back shots handled effortlessly. The gastro-sized 2-liter water tank is easy to lift out via two side handles and can even be tossed in the dishwasher for a proper clean. Just be careful: it won’t stand up on its own and tips over when placed on a flat surface. After extended sessions, it gets noticeably warm – so hygiene is something to keep an eye on.
The drip tray of the Sanremo YOU is generally easy to remove and quick to take apart. A small, well-visible float acts like a little buoy, clearly signalling when it’s time to empty – a simple yet brilliant feature that not every machine offers. But overall, handling the drip tray is a bit of a chore and feels half-baked: the drip grid has some sharp edges that can easily give you a small cut. And once cleaned, putting the plastic tray and grid back together requires a lot of patience – getting it to fit properly takes a careful touch, and sliding it back into the machine is something you need to practice. This is where Sanremo could’ve paid more attention to the details.

Ease of Use & Settings
With the Sanremo YOU, the range of options feels like you ticked every box in the configurator. It may be overwhelming for beginners, but for coffee geeks it’s pure bliss. You can manually control pressure and flow during extraction using the paddle, or you can take a more methodical approach and save your favorite brew profiles – up to twelve of them, fully customizable across all three extraction phases. Pre-infusion and post-infusion can also be completely turned off.
A standout feature: the YOU can save pressure curves created on the fly with the paddle. So if you stumble upon your perfect shot during a freestyle session, you can save it under your own name and recreate it later with a single button press.
Add in PID temperature control and volumetrics that stop right on the dot after setup, and you’ve got serious precision at your fingertips.
The user interface of the Sanremo YOU provides extensive control but this involves a learning curve: small touch targets, a nested menu structure accessed via an inconspicuous icon, and a narrow scroll menu. Some functions only respond to a long press, not a quick tap – logical once you know, frustrating until then. Sanremo promised improvements to the touchscreen menu in the next update. The Bezzera DUO DE from our test fleet also offers pretty precise control, by the way – but in classic E61 style, without a touchscreen or convoluted menus.
Highly practical: automated maintenance programs for the steam wand, boiler, brew group, descaling, and even transport drainage.
Bottom line? If you just want the basics, you’ll find them easily. But if you want to go deep, the YOU gives you all the tools – and near-limitless possibilities.
PID, pre-infusion & co. – what does it all actually mean?
Feeling overwhelmed by all the tech jargon? You’ll find a clear overview of the key technologies in the world of portafilter machines in the main article of our group test.
How Well Does It Handle Coffee and Milk Texturing?
The Sanremo YOU pulls creamy, viscous espresso at the push of a button – easily rivaling the shots from our favorite Italian café. If you want to fine-tune the result, you can – with flow control, pre-infusion, and custom profiles that give each shot your personal signature. For everyday use, volumetrics takes over. Once set up correctly, it nails the stop point every time, making consistent shots practically foolproof.
With the steam wand, the YOU flexes some serious muscle. It delivers steady pressure with fine control, delivering easy and precise milk frothing. In our long-term Sanremo YOU review, the result was consistently impressive: dense, creamy microfoam, perfect for latte art. The hot water spout also sits at a comfortable height and provides just what you need for an Americano or tea.
Note: During our multi-week test period, we experienced an issue with steam pressure – milk frothing wasn’t possible due to a faulty steam sensor. That said, this doesn’t appear to be a common problem with the Sanremo YOU – we couldn’t find similar reports in any user forums. Sanremo quickly sent us a replacement unit, which we’re continuing to test. If the issue doesn’t reoccur, this note will be removed.
I could buy a road bike from that!
Who Should Take a Closer Look at the Sanremo YOU?
- Profiling nerds and espresso tinkerers
- Advanced users who are eager to learn
- Design lovers and showroom stagers (this one’s a statement piece – quiet rotary pump, bold presence)
- Small cafés that can work with a single-group machine
- Small offices or teams (up to ~10 people) – as long as someone takes care of the presets
Does it Live up to the Hype?
Not entirely. The “personal assistant” idea doesn’t fully live up to the name – the machine offers serious depth, but the menu navigation and small touch targets require patience and time to learn. Still, the Sanremo YOU does deliver on its core promise: if you want to dial in every detail, it gives you the full toolbox – from live paddle profiling and savable recipes to precise control over temperature and volume. It invites you to experiment and fine-tune your personal flavor profile over time.
That complexity also reveals its roots: the YOU was made for the pro world. Even though it’s showing up in more private homes, we wouldn’t call it the best portafilter machine for the average household.
And what about the price drop? Sanremo haven’t officially lowered the RRP – the current price reflects what the market is doing. Are you still paying partly for the name? Absolutely. Sanremo is a prestigious commercial brand, and the YOU leans into that image hard. But you’re not just paying for the badge. With the YOU’s feature set, you’re getting real value in return. So yes, there’s a brand premium – but that’s not the whole story.
Conclusions
The Sanremo YOU is high-end territory for home baristas – a machine where every box is ticked: full control, serious steam power, detailed profiling. Substance meets show. It delivers the level of control it promises – though the user experience could be a touch more intuitive. The recent price drop brings the overall package closer to reality. Still pricey, of course – but if you’re ready to invest over €5,000 and put in the time to learn, Sanremo gives you a machine that makes an impact – and carries real prestige.

- Quiet rotary pump
Flops
- UX/navigation: nested menus, tiny touch targets
- Cleaning brush made from cheap plastic
