This review is part of our group test: “7 Espresso Machines in Review – What Is the Best Espresso Machine for Your Home?”. We examined models ranging from €300 to €6,000 – from compact entry-level machines to high-end barista dreams. Along the journey came latte art experiments, a few scorched fingers, and more than enough caffeine coursing through our veins. Here’s the guide and overview of all machines tested.
Unconventional, bold, and a little disruptive: the LIGRE youn is determined to shake up the espresso machine market – and it’s not just about the looks. With its minimalist aesthetics, reminiscent of a Bang & Olufsen speaker, it feels more like a living room design piece than your typical chrome-clad espresso machine. But this departure from the norm goes beyond surface-level style.
The youn aims to deliver high-end performance with a radically simplified user experience–so even complete beginners can brew barista-grade espresso and cappuccino right out of the box. The secret? A smart, tiered user interface with modes for every skill level – from newbie to nerd, as the brand puts it. Brew profiles, temperature, timer, and user presets are all adjustable – without needing a degree in espresso science. And if you think LIGRE is some scrappy little start-up, you’re mistaken. Behind it is Gronbach, a German family-run company that’s been developing premium appliances for top-tier brands for decades. Now, with their own label, they’re stepping into the spotlight. The LIGRE youn features some serious engineering: a custom-designed heating and control system with a massive brass block, sensors, flow heater, and heating cartridges for near-instant heat-up. Brew temperature and pressure are regulated right inside the group head, ensuring a level of consistency many machines can’t match.
But high performance comes at a price. The LIGRE youn sits firmly in US tech giant territory – starting at €3,980, with some versions breaking the €6,000 mark. And still, there’s no milk jug in the box – just a single double portafilter with two basket sizes and a tamper. Even the cheapest machine in our test, the De’Longhi Dedica Duo, includes one.
Still, there’s no doubt: the LIGRE youn has the potential to totally reinvent your morning coffee ritual. We’ll explain why in this full review.

LIGRE youn on Review – So, What’s It Like Living With This Espresso Machine?
Specs are one thing, but how does the youn actually perform in everyday life? From materials and handling to workflow and that first cappuccino – here’s what it’s like to use this machine day to day.
First Impressions: Design, Build & Feel
With its angular aluminum body and precisely milled edges, the youn looks more like a designer piece that happens to brew coffee. Overall, the design breaks with convention: the LIGRE youn brings a completely new, modern aesthetic to the portafilter game, echoing the restrained minimalism of Scandinavian design. It would sit perfectly next to high-end sparkling water dispensers in any luxury kitchen – whether in the sleek Silver Beige base color or the ultra-dark matte black, which costs €500 more.
Of course, not everyone is a fan of this unconventional look. If you love the timeless vibe of a La Marzocco Linea or a Bezzera, you might see the ultra-clean LIGRE youn as a sterile, soulless piece of design. Just like with different specialty coffee beans – taste is subjective.

Set it up in the kitchen and one thing becomes clear fast: this machine doesn’t follow the unspoken rules of the portafilter world. It takes up serious space, especially in width – at 45 cm, it’s nearly 10 cm wider than the Bezzera DUO DE and Sanremo YOU, the next-largest machines in our test.
The youn is available in several configurations, from a base model in silver beige with a tamper (no wood handle), up to a fully specced version with wood-handled tamper and matching brush – offered in different wood finishes. Build quality is premium, just as you’d expect in this class. No shortcuts on materials either – a brass group head, anodized aluminum housing, and fully metal controls throughout. Even the buttons for steam, coffee, and hot water are made of metal, finished in the same tone as the housing and blending seamlessly into the minimalist aesthetic. Bonus: the matte anodized aluminum is extremely resistant to fingerprints – unlike the chrome-heavy classics such as the Bezzera DUO DE. The trade-off? Like a black car after rain, every speck of dust and splash shows instantly.
Still, easy to forgive – because the youn not only looks good but feels just as refined. In easy mode, the buttons respond with a soft press, the wooden portafilter handle feels smooth and solid – an ergonomic experience that makes the machine’s premium ambition clear. LIGRE’s design philosophy? You feel it in every touchpoint.

LIGRE youn Review: Heat-Up Time & Workflow
Hop in the shower while the machine warms up? Not worth it. With an industry-leading heat-up time under four minutes, the youn makes even a quick rinse redundant. That’s thanks to its hybrid heating system: a thermoblock heats the 1.6 L tank water on demand – no need to preheat a boiler for espresso.
Meanwhile, a dedicated 0.8 L steam boiler delivers consistent steam power – meaning less waiting and a smoother workflow. And if your extended family drops in, you’ll be cranking out cappuccinos by the minute. Another big plus: the thermoblock setup makes the youn far more energy-efficient than traditional dual boilers, especially in eco mode.
Ease of Use & Settings
Using the youn feels as natural as flipping a light switch. The icons for hot water, steam, and espresso are clear and straightforward, with no guesswork in easy mode. Pull up the buttons and you enter “nerd mode,” a hidden bonus feature. Once discovered, whether by accident or after a look at the manual, you unlock advanced controls like brew pressure, pre-infusion, and brew temperature.
At 19.4 kg, the machine has a reassuring heft that works in its favor. Once in place, it stays put and allows easy one-handed operation. That’s typical of high-end machines, unlike the lightweight De’Longhi Dedica Duo from our group test, which tends to slide around unless you hold it.

LIGRE guide – An In-House Digital Barista
One of our favorite features? The LIGRE guide. If you’re using coffee beans instead of pre-ground, even complete newbies can easily find the ideal grind setting for their beans – and thus the perfect espresso – with the machine’s help in just a few minutes. So, does the LIGRE make all those video tutorials and endless hours of grinder tweaking a thing of the past?
To some extent, yes: in a kind of digital dialogue on the display, the program asks whether you’re using pre-ground coffee or grinding yourself. If you’re working with beans and a grinder – which is basically gospel for most home baristas – the guide gives feedback after each shot during the setup phase, telling you how far you are from ideal espresso and what might be going wrong if you’re not quite there yet.
For the next shot, it offers tips on grind size, tamping pressure, and coffee dose. During our test of the LIGRE youn, we almost felt like we were back in barista training at Rotbart Kaffee again – the advice from this digital barista is that practical and helpful. By the end of this little digital barista course, a delicious espresso flows from the portafilter, and even newcomers feel competent and capable of achieving consistent results going forward.
Shot Correction and Adaptive Brewing
Another standout: the LIGRE youn’s shot correction. If, for whatever reason, you’re using pre-ground coffee (which, of course, no true barista would ever do) or your grind is too coarse, the machine automatically adjusts brew pressure and water flow to get the most out of your grounds. This level of adaptability is revolutionary – and the sensors behind it also power the selectable sensory profiles. More on those below.

Optional Companion with Style – The siji Grinder
As a companion to the youn, LIGRE also offers the precision grinder siji. Much like with other manufacturers like Sanremo and ZURIGA, it matches the espresso machine perfectly in design and connects to the youn like a seamlessly integrated extension. It grinds silently, incredibly fast, and with great precision. Still, we recommend the €1,180 grind-by-weight grinder with some reservations: when dialed in for finer grinds needed for lighter roasts, it occasionally refused to grind during testing. Another downside: there’s no removable grounds tray, meaning the coffee grounds collect in the bottom area and have to be awkwardly vacuumed or wiped away. For us, the siji still feels like a work in progress – but one with definite potential.
Pre-configured Instead of Full Control – The youn’s Sensory Profiles
If you’re not in the mood for a digital barista course with the LIGRE guide but still want some influence over what lands in your cup, you can choose from three pre-configured settings called sensory profiles – with charming names like mellow morning, vibrant vigor, and brilliant bold. These profiles offer specific flavor directions or extraction styles and vary the pre-infusion and pressure curves accordingly. Limitation: creating your own fully customized pressure or flow profile isn’t an option – a real bummer for those expecting total control from a machine in this premium price range. Hardcore espresso nerds with deep pockets might be better off with the tech beast that is the Sanremo YOU, where every single parameter can be adjusted down to the smallest detail.
PID, pre-infusion & co. – what does it all actually mean?
Feeling overwhelmed by all the tech jargon? You’ll find a clear overview of the key technologies in the world of portafilter machines in the main article of our group test.

Both cleaning and maintenance are refreshingly straightforward with the youn. The tank is easy to slot in, remove and clean – and since it doesn’t heat up, it won’t turn into a bacteria trap. The drip tray is magnetically attached, pops out quickly, and clicks right back in. A small brush lets you reach into tight corners without much hassle. And great news for anyone who loves a low-effort routine: the machine comes with several automated maintenance programs – for the steam wand, boiler, brew group, descaling, and even draining the system for transport.
How Well Does It Handle Coffee and Milk Texturing?
One press of a button starts the espresso shot – in easy mode, the volumetrics reliably stop at the preset amount, while in manual nerd mode, you control the shot time and thus the water volume. The PID+ temperature control keeps things stable throughout the brew.
Things get really interesting with latte macchiato, cappuccino & co. The steam wand isn’t just a pipe–it’s a techy little showpiece. In automatic mode, it recognizes the target temperature set by the user and uses an integrated air pump to froth the milk all by itself. Just place your jug, press the button, lean back, and enjoy. Prefer to go manual? No problem–you can take over and steam your milk freestyle. A big help: the milk temperature is shown on the display, so you can stop before it overheats. The display even gives a warning when the milk gets too hot–smarter than some baristas we’ve met.
In our test, both steam modes delivered strong results, though the manual mode produced an even denser, creamier microfoam–perfect for latte art.
The only downside? Despite the cool-touch design, the wand still gets quite warm after a short time. The part below the insulated section doesn’t get dangerously hot, but if you accidentally brush against it, it’s not exactly pleasant.

Who Should Take a Closer Look at the LIGRE youn?
- Anyone who wants their espresso fast – no waiting, no fuss.
- Portafilter beginners who want a machine that offers real guidance
- Deep-pocketed coffee fans with a taste for cutting-edge tech
- Anyone who isn’t stuck in the past when it comes to design and is open to breaking conventions – even with their espresso machine
Does It Live Up to the Hype?
The LIGRE youn isn’t the holy grail for hardcore coffee nerds who expect unlimited freedom to experiment alongside sleek design – the term nerd mode is a bit misleading here. If you’re looking to go full-on tech and tweak every last detail like pressure curves and water volume during extraction, the Sanremo YOU is the better pick in our test lineup.
That said, LIGRE pulled off something impressive with the youn: a smart fusion of aesthetics, solid engineering, and intuitive operation that makes it easy even for newbies to get into the portafilter game. At the same time, it positions itself as a modern design object that brings a sense of calm and elegance to your kitchen – especially in the light-colored version, which whispers serenity instead of shouting “chrome!”
Conclusions
Gronbach’s first in-house creation is more than just a machine – it’s a statement, blending design object and remarkable engineering. The LIGRE youn delivers top-tier espresso and cappuccino for both newcomers and seasoned coffee lovers who don’t need to obsess over customizing complex flow or pressure curves. Bold, different, stylish – and despite the minimal accessory kit, it’s this unconventional all-round concept that takes the win in our portafilter machine test.
